There's a new patch for the Windows version of the game to coincide with today's release of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for Mac OS X. No transmogrification of your PC into OS X is involved, but it does fix a lot of bugs and add some nice features to the game, in particular, five new class kits: Dwarven Defender, Shadowdancer, Dragon Disciple, Dark Moon Monk and Sun Soul Monk. The patch is available for the Beamdog version of the game (Mac OS X version already includes it), and presumably the corresponding updates for iPad (App Store) and Steam (Atari->Steam) versions are being filtered through their more lengthy approval processes. On January 15th, Overhaul Games released patch 1.0.2012 for the Windows version of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, which includes a long list of bug fixes, crash fixes, and minor feature additions. At the time of this post, a corresponding iPad update has not yet been deployed but has been promised soon.
Update: Notably, only the Beamdog version of BG:EE should be receiving the patch at this time. The Steam version of BG:EE must have its patches filtered through publisher Atari before it is deployed on Steam, so "there will be a delay." Apparently Overhaul Games had no direct involvement in the adaptation of the game for addition on Steam. Read More
The long-awaited Mac OS X port of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition has finally gotten a release date, and it is February 22, 2013. It will initially be arriving at Beamdog, where you can already begin preloading the game, and coming soon to the Mac App Store. If you're a stickler for getting game patches as soon as they are released, history with both the Windows and iPad releases suggests that you should get the Beamdog version. There is always a delay in deploying updates through Apple's app stores due to the additional approval process. Steamplay for this title is highly unlikely right now, considering the publishing/updating situation with the current Steam version of the game, although never say never.
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition harkens back to a grander age of pc gaming, when elaborate game box inserts packed some serious reference material. A number of players have collaborated to bring relevance back BG:EE's manuals through an unofficial update to this game's digital documentation with more accurate spell and kit information, descriptions, and photographs. Their unofficial BG:EE game manual has just been updated to version 1.0.2 and can be downloaded for free via Microsoft Skydrive.
Previously a Beamdog exclusive release, Overhaul Games' Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition has finally made its way to the notoriously popular digital distribution service Steam. With the introduction of this Steamworks-DRMed version of the game, we're starting to see other digital distributors such as GamersGate add it to their catalog.
Compared to the classic Baldur's Gate (DRM-free, which can be purchased at Good Old Games), Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition adds a new adventure, three new companions, additional player character voice sets, and an improved widescreen UI, among many other tweaks. BG:EE is currently available for PC and iPad, with Mac OSX and Android tablet versions still in the works.
Starting tomorrow, Gamestop will be offering a 75% discount ($11.24) on the pc digital download of its Dungeons & Dragons Ultimate Collection, which includes the classic, complete versions of both Baldur's Gate games as well as both complete Neverwinter Nights collections, among other acclaimed Dungeons and Dragons titles (Icewind Dale 1+2 complete, Planescape: Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil). There is no indication about which DRM schemes, if any, are present for these downloads.
The Baldur's Gate website was apparently counting down to the moment at which their web server would go down (due to the flood of traffic). But in other news, Beamdog wanted to mention that they'll be releasing Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, a HD remake of another D&D BioWare classic sometime this Summer 2012. Read More
