Over on the Bioware forums, user Vamplosion has shared an interesting discovery made while downloading the latest PS3 patch for Mass Effect 2. Potential spoilers after the break.
While patching his game, Vamplosion came across three trophies (the Sony equivalent to achievements) that belong to a DLC campaign named "Arrival". The trophies are:
Ultimate Sacrifice - Complete the Arrival DLC. Last Stand - Complete all 5 waves in the battle for Object Roh. Covert Action - Rescue Dr. Amanda Kenson without attracting hostile attention.
For those of you who actually followed the Cerberus Daily News, the name Amanda Kenson should ring a bell. The final piece in the feed detailed a discovery made by the doctor:
01/24/2011 - Paper Suggests Mass Relays Predate Protheans
Historians and astronomers alike are abuzz tonight over a new paper published by Dr. Amanda Kenson of the University of Arcturus. Her team claims that by testing the dust trapped in the gravity wells around a mass relay, and comparing its composition to that of dust clouds in the same system, scientists can create a timeline of when the relay passed through the dust. Her conclusion? "Only a small fraction of the mass effect relays date back 50,000 years," she writes, "The majority are far older, indicating they were created by a species predating even the Protheans." Dr. Aurana T'Meles of the University of Serrice met the information with skepticism: "While Dr. Kenson's methods appear sound, the asari tried a similar procedure centuries ago and discounted it. What civilization could have spanned the galaxy for not thousands, but millions of years? If this were the case, we should have found mountains of evidence of their passing. Where is this species now?"
A human makes a groundbreaking discovery only to face skepticism from her alien peers along the way? Seems a bit of running gag in the universe. Regardless, it appears that Shepard will find another ally who will come to understand the cycle of extinction that plagues the galaxy.
However, from what we can gleam, it seems that this DLC will pave the way for the Reapers to begin their assault on the galaxy. The completion trophy, "The Ultimate Sacrifice", quite strongly hints at a hard decision that Shepard will have to make. This could be leaving someone to die, or even pulling defenses from entire worlds to face the threat. The other two trophies point towards specific mission sequences, including a stealth segment to find the doctor and an moment of holding a position against waves of enemies.
This is exciting news for Mass Effect fans. Particularly those who are already bloated with Dragon Age hype. What are your thoughts?
Update: Jesse Houston, producer for Mass Effect 2 has confirmed that Arrival is the next DLC in the works, having admitted that the leak was unintentional. He's stated in the original thread that more information will be available when the PR team gives the go-ahead, but the office is closed on holiday, so we might be hearing more tomorrow.
